Cardi B. A name almost no one in the mainstream media knew until her current hit “Bodak Yellow” reached the charts. Now she sits in her third week on top of the Billboard hot 100 after she overtook Taylor Swift’s iconic hit “Look what you made me do”.
Cards B has now officially become the second female rapper to do so after Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998, an artist revered in the hip-hop community and regarded as one of the best female rappers of all time. But no one had ever achieved the feat of number 1 on the top 100 for almost 20 years, until the Love & Hip-Hop star released this very catchy song. Cardi B who is beginning to impress critics and fans and being compared to early Lil’ Kim, the song has an extraordinary beat, hook and lyrics which make this an easy song to listen to.
Could this pave the way for more solo female rappers to repeat the effort of Cardi B? It very well could, record labels are always on the lookout for talent. Generally females aren’t taken as seriously as males, that's got nothing to do with their gender but more the fact that theres just a lack of real female talent with a few exceptions like Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliot and Lauryn Hill back in the day.
Do you think that the success of “Bodak Yellow” and Cardi B pave the way for more female rappers to become mainstream stars? Or will she be a one off and have to wait another 20 years? Have a listen below:
