This is... the power of Music

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

For centuries music, in any form, has been used to soothe hearts, express love, overcome trauma and cope with daily struggles in life.

With such strong reactions to Childish Gambino's This Is America single, it's clear that a lot of the music we listen to today conveys a much deeper, serious message; even months after its release.

With a lot of speculation over the true meaning behind Daniel Glover's music video and elusive lyrics; the general consensus is that his artwork epitomizes the current climate of America. It showcases their inner social struggles with a variety of serious topics including gun violence. His music conveys the notion that America is blind to some extent and unfocused on what really matters, there are also references to the 'American Dream' lifestyle.

Since his creativity sparked a level of inspiration in artists around the world we have seen many 'copycat' videos, namely the most pressing being 'This Is Nigeria' and 'This Is Iraq'. These two videos have collectively voiced issues in their country that are now accessible to a worldwide audience. With specific things usually left out of the media, rarely spoken of or brushed under the carpet, these artists saw their chance to make a difference through music and decided to shoot their shot.

This Is Nigeria

This Is Iraq

Both videos are extremely compelling and emotive. Do you think this is a good way to reach out to people? Can this style of activism make a difference? Let us know what you think!

If you were in a position of creating something similar about your own country, what would you include?
